KURTIS ROBERTS and Bobby Wales took home the glory as Alloa Athletic hosted their supporters’ Player of the Year Awards Night.

Held at Tillicoultry Golf Club, the event returned in person for the first time since before Covid, with the venue fully booked from fans and family members alike.

The majority of Alloa’s squad attended the event to mark the end of the regular League One campaign and to celebrate the club’s achievements so far this year.

Alan Harrower, who organised the event, got the night underway thanking everyone for attending before welcoming the Advertiser to present our Player of the Year award.

Kurtis Roberts won Advertiser Sport POTY and was handed the trophy alongside Ryan Stirling, who was beaming with pride at handing the trophy over to Roberts.

Next up was the Supporters’ POTY which, after a tight vote running over the week prior to the awards, was won by Bobby Wales.

The on-loan Kilmarnock striker came up to lift his trophy, and also returned to pick up top goalscorer, ending the regular League One campaign with 12 goals.

He said a few words thanking everyone for their votes and also called on Alloa Athletic to finish the job in the playoffs and secure promotion.

Roberts was called up again to list Goal of the Season, as voted by the supporters, for his very memorable maiden strike against Hamilton, his first for the club.

Kit man Pat Dunne picked up an award for his service to the club and thanks were also made to Joyce who runs the pie hut at the Recs and to the organisers for the event.

Afterwards, Andy Graham gave a speech, but denied guests the chance to hear him sing, calling on the team and the supporters to rally together and back the club ahead of a huge playoff campaign starting on Tuesday.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Graham said. “It’s really important as a club that we get everyone together and that includes the fanbase.

“We need to get support for everybody and I told the players when I got the job that if we were going to achieve anything in life or in football, you’ve got to be in it together.

“We need to try and get that back and get everyone together. I thank the guys that have stepped up to the plate and organised the night, it’s been fantastic.

“It’s important to me that, moving forward, we get more and more fans to these events because the turn out from the players speaks volumes.

“It’s a fantastic turn out from them especially when we’ve got a game on Tuesday but I thought it was good that as many of them came as they could and you saw that tonight.

“It speaks volumes about the squad and about their attitude towards Alloa, they’re all here and they’re all in it together.

“Bobby said in his speech that he feels we can achieve something if we’re all in it together and that’s the mantra I’m trying to get over.

“Nights like this are hopefully the start of doing that and getting everybody together and everyone on board on the same level at the club."
