East Premier League

DELIGHTED Sauchie Juniors boss Fraser Duncan admits he is running out of superlatives for his in-form players as they extended their 100 per cent record with a 4-0 win at St Andrews.

The latest win was so impressive that Duncan believes very few teams would have been able to withstand their first-half onslaught.

The former Ipswich Town trainee expected the trip to the Fife town to be their toughest test of the season, but heaped praise on his squad for cruising to their seventh straight league win to extend their lead at the top of the East Premier League.

Duncan said: “We have been simply brilliant at the moment.

“We went into the game with the aim of getting off to a quick start because I knew with the form we had been in, that it might just put a few doubts in their minds if we did that.

“That is exactly the way it worked out and to be honest we were simply unplayable in the first half.

"I am not sure any team could have coped with us in that first half and some of the football we played was superb. The athleticism, energy and our desire was different class.

“I thought the game would’ve been our toughest test of the season because it is always such a tough place to go and win, but I think St Andrews were a little shocked with the level we produced.

“To go there and be 4-0 up at the break with the game wrapped up at that point was very pleasing. I am chuffed to bits to pass probably our toughest test yet and the boys have passed it with flying colours.

“Now it is just a case of keeping our feet on the ground and not get too carried away because there is a long way to go.”

Duncan is now preparing his men for a different challenge all together as they get set to travel to Aberdeenshire on Saturday to face Newburgh Thistle in the first round of the Scottish Junior Cup and he is determined to cover every angle to give them the best chance of progressing.

The 32-year-old revealed an extended run in the prestigious national competition has always been one of his main ambitions and says this season is no different.

He said: “The Scottish Cup is always a major priority for us and we have to do well in it this year.

"It is one of our main objectives for the season to give a good account of ourselves in the competition so it is important we start well.

“We have a bit of a fitness concern with our captain Brian Morgan, who picked up a knock on Saturday and at this stage he would have to be a major doubt for the game.

“He would be a big miss for us, but that everyone else is fit and we go there full of confidence.

“The trip up there to Newburgh is something we have to get right because with an away tie like this, it is just as important to get the travelling right.

“The preparations for the game are going well and we have left no stone unturned for it, but the opposition are a bit of an unknown for us.

“We are trying to get as much information on them as possible so we will just have to focus on ourselves.

"They will know plenty about us, so I am sure they won’t be looking forward to playing us in this kind of form and if we can play half as well as last week then I will be delighted.”

The Beechwood Park boss reserved special praise for in-form forward Ryan Millar, who has started the season in electric form, and he hopes the ex-Alloa Athletic youngster can continue to go from strength to strength this season.

Duncan added: “Ryan Millar has been exceptional for us this season and on Saturday it was the very same.

“We have put a few things into Ryan’s game that he had to get better at. I had to get him to work harder when we lose the ball and not in possession, but to be fair to him he has done that and his game has came on tenfold

"He is a player with pace to burn and is electric when he runs at defences. He is player who is very direct and likes to get at people and St Andrews just couldn’t cope with him last weekend.”
