GOAL hero Iain Flannigan says their late 2-1 win over Queens Park last weekend has them in high spirits as they prepare to face the SPFL Premiership champions Celtic in the quarter finals of the Betfred Cup tomorrow (Wednesday).

The Wasps star says they will approach the game with no fears and place their faith in manager Jack Ross to prepare them for it once again just as he did when masterminding the defeats of Ross County, Inverness Caley Thistle and Raith Rovers to get them to this stage.

The 27-year-old believes the Wee County outfit have deserved their night in the limelight after winning every game in the competition so far, and he is confident they can give a good account of themselves in the live BT Sport clash.

Flannigan told Advertiser Sport: “You have to take every game on its own merits, but it is a good that we have a win going into the game at Parkhead. The manner of the win keeps our spirits high going into the Celtic clash and it is one the boys are all looking forward to.

"We know [it] will be a totally different game and it presents a totally different challenge for us, but it is a good game for us to play in.

“The gaffer will have us well prepared as he always does, but we know Celtic will be on the front foot with the way they are playing at the moment. It is important to remember that we are playing well ourselves though, and it is just a case of us working hard and sticking together then see where that takes us.

“The game is 90 minutes, so we will go there and give our best to get the result it is as simple as that for us. It will no doubt be a big challenge because they’re a good side, but it is the sort of games you look forward to and we have certainly earned the chance with our form so far in the competition.”

Flannigan was delighted to notch the winner as the Wasps battled back from a goal down to see off a spirited Queens Park side and go back top of League One.

And the midfield maestro was quick to praise his team mates for their part in the victory.

He said: “We are pleased with the win. I think Queens Park were good and very organised. We weren’t quite at it for some reason ourselves if we are being honest, but I thought we showed a lot of character.

"It was a difficult game because we have definitely played better, but you cannot always play to your best.

“The game was a wee bit scrappy at times, but considering we were 1-0 down with a little more than ten minutes left, it shows the spirit we have in the camp to come back and win it. Every game will throw up different challenges for us, but I felt like we adapted well and rolled up our sleeves for the win.

“Spence has done brilliant to win the penalty and then tuck it away. I was obviously delighted with the pass from Luke Donnelly for the winner and I was just delighted that I was able to tuck it away.

"I think once we got to 2-1 there was no way we were letting that slide and we are absolutely buzzing.”

The former Partick Thistle star was delighted to see the Wasps show their battling qualities as they fought back to see off Gus McPherson’s men and he reckons it could prove a vital three points.

Flannigan added: “It was a wee bit of a heated affair at times and as I have said you can’t always win games the same way.

"Queens Park have their own style and were very high energy as well as being organised, so it was good to see a different side to our game where we just dug in and ground out the result.

"The more the game went on it got more and more stretched and that is when we came into our own to dig out what could be a vital result for us.”
