CENTRAL AC’s John MacLennan was on top form at the Scottish under 17 championships at Grangemouth last weekend as he took gold in the 100m, one of five medals Central athletes won in this age group.

After running a wind assisted PB of 11.10s in the semi final to qualify fastest John had to work hard in the final to hold off Giffnock pair Adam Clayton and Andy Moses.

But John crossed the line first in a wind-legal PB of 11.11s to claim the gold medal.

The club record on electronic timing is 11.10s so John just missed this twice but goes 4th on the club senior all time list for 100m.

Jack Houghton was contesting both distances of hurdles and found himself up against Scottish number one, Joel MacFarlane in both events.

In the 400m hurdles Jack pushed Joel hard and looked like he might take the lead going into the home straight but Joel found his stride and pulled away. However, Jack maintained his rhythm to knock another second off his own club record to finish in 57.50s.

He then took on the 100m Hurdles and again challenged for the lead but ended up taking bronze behind Joel and Northern Irish athlete, Josh Armstrong. His time was another big personal best though as he dipped below 14 seconds for the first time in 13.98s.

Matt Chandler was warming up for the UK decathlon championships next weekend in Bedford and started well with a silver in the pole vault.

A strong cross wind made conditions difficult but he made first time clearances all the way up to 3.61m for 2nd.

Central’s Matthew Meredith was just outside the medals clearing 3.01m for 4th.

Matt Chandler then took on the long jump in a top class competition where two Scots are currently leading the UK rankings with over seven metres.

Matt though achieved his aim of jumping 6m for the first time ever smashing his pb with 6.21m for 5th which sets him up well for next weekend.

The girls 300m event saw two Central athletes in the final with Catriona Laing and Anna Cameron both qualifying from their heats.

A strong wind in the back straight ruled out any hope of fast times but Catriona finished strongly to come through for silver with 41.70s. Anna was 7th with 43.68s.

Catriona went on to the 200m final as well finishing 6th with 26.51s.

Jessica Cleland was making her first appearance of season after injury and just missed the podium in the 80m hurdles with 4th but set a new personal best with 12.02s.

Fiona Davies was close to her PB in the pole vault placing 5th with 2.41m.

Lauren McCulloch took 5th place in the 800m with 2:24.22.

Keiran Halliday set an excellent pb in a fast 200m race placing 6th with 23.89s.

Lucy Mason was close to the 200m final running 27.32s to reach the semi finals.
